UNILAG Marks Russia Day With Cultural Display And Awards Ceremony
The Department of European Languages and Integration Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG), joined the Russian Federation in celebrating the annual Russia Day a national holiday observed every year on June 12

Russia Day commemorates the adoption of the *Declaration on State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR)* by the First Congress of People’s Deputies on *June 12, 1990*. This year marks the *36th anniversary* of the historic declaration. Until 2002, the celebration was officially known as the Day of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Russia
Speaking to journalists during the event, *Dr. Joshua Oladotun Orabiyi**, Lecturer of Russian Language in the Department of European Languages and Integration Studies, explained why the day is significant to Russians and why the University of Lagos annually joins in commemorating the occasion.

“Every 12th of June is Russia Day. However, here in Lagos, Nigeria, in line with our academic calendar, we celebrate it towards the end of July, which is what we are doing today,” he said.
According to Dr. Orabiyi, the celebration aligns with the global observance of Russia Day and commemorates Russia’s emergence as an independent nation following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

“It is a day when Russians celebrate their national identity. As part of our celebration, we showcase Russian culture through poetry recitations, songs, traditional dances, and Russian cuisine, allowing our students and guests to experience the richness of Russian heritage,” he added.
Addressing students studying the Russian language, Dr. Orabiyi encouraged them to remain committed to their studies and recognize the unique opportunities available to them.
“I want our students to always remember that they are first-class students with special opportunities. Doors continue to open for them every day.”

He further noted that his recent appointment as *Ambassador of Russian Education and Science* has created even greater prospects for students.
” With this recognition, opportunities for Russian language education and scientific collaboration have expanded significantly. Our students now have greater access to careers as professional translators and interpreters, with employment opportunities in Russian companies operating in Nigeria, as well as Russian investments across the African continent.”
As part of the celebration, Awards of Excellence were presented to distinguished guests in recognition of their outstanding contributions to education, public service, and international cooperation.

Among the award recipients were:
AIG Simeon U. Akpanudom, psc, fdc, MSPSP, MNIM, Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos.
