Panic In Lagos: NURTW Chieftain “Toba Ijaya” Shot Dead On Ikorodu Road
Lagos was thrown into tension over the weekend following the gruesome murder of a senior chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as “Toba Ijaya”
According to reports, the Organising Secretary of the NURTW in Lagos was attacked by yet-to-be-identified gunmen on Sunday along Ikorodu Road while returning to his home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
Sources said the assailants intercepted his white vehicle and opened fire, leaving multiple bullet holes on the windscreen and other parts of the car. He was rushed to St. Nichola Hospital on Lagos Island, where medical experts confirmed him dead from gunshot injuries.
News of his death spread quickly, sparking panic across Mushin, Yaba and Fadeyi areas. Viral WhatsApp and social media messages warned residents to avoid movement and return home early over fears of possible reprisal attacks by his loyalists.
Reacting to the killing, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, met with leaders of NURTW and RTEAN and assured them that a thorough investigation had commenced. He said officers have been deployed to strategic locations to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
“The command has commenced a diligent, professional and unbiased investigation. Anyone found breaching the peace will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Tijani stated.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, also confirmed that security personnel have been stationed across the state while a manhunt for the killers is ongoing.
Meanwhile, Lagos NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle popularly called “Sego”, expressed grief over the death of his ally, describing Toba Ijaya as a loyal and trusted friend.
As at the time of filing this report, no arrest has been made and the motive behind the killing remains unclear.
