Tragedy in Niger: Lightning Kills 14-Year-Old Student Seeking Shelter Under Tree
A 14-year-old student, Yahaya Tafida, has died after being struck by lightning in Lapai Local Government Area, Niger State.
Family sources told Streetwise Media the incident happened around 6 p.m. on Monday. Yahaya was playing football with friends at the Government Girls’ Day Secondary School field when a rainstorm with strong winds forced everyone to run for shelter.
Eyewitnesses said the SS2 student ran under a tree to escape the downpour. Lightning struck moments later, killing him instantly.
The news has thrown the Lapai community into mourning. Residents and schoolmates described Yahaya as a quiet, promising boy whose life was cut short in a moment.
While rare, lightning-related deaths rise during Nigeria’s peak rainy season. Meteorological experts warn the public to avoid open fields and trees during thunderstorms. Safer options are buildings with proper roofing and lightning conductors.
Yahaya was buried same day according to Islamic rites. May his soul rest in peace.
