BEYOND THE HANDOUTS: NGOs LAUNCH ₦250 MILLION DRIVE FOR SUSTAINABLE EMPOWERMENT

In a bold move to address the root causes of poverty and economic vulnerability in Nigeria, the Heart of Gold Support & Care Initiative and the Patrick Ejedawe Foundation have announced plans to host a landmark Luncheon and Fundraising Ceremony aimed at raising ₦250 million to fund transformative programmes in education, entrepreneurship, skills development, and sustainable community empowerment.

The event, scheduled for Friday, June 26, 2026, at the OPTS Hall, LCCI Exhibition Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, is expected to attract an impressive gathering of business leaders, philanthropists, policymakers, development partners, and social impact advocates committed to building a more inclusive and prosperous society.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Convener, Chief (Mrs.) Joy Patrick Ehiagwina, noted that the fundraising effort is designed to shift the narrative from short-term charitable interventions to long-term investments in human capacity development.
According to her, sustainable empowerment remains the most effective pathway to breaking the cycle of poverty, creating opportunities, and restoring dignity to vulnerable individuals and communities.

The event will be chaired by Chief Patrick Anegbe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Intercontinental Distilleries Limited, while the Special Guest of Honour, Rt. Hon. James Faleke, Representative of Ikeja Federal Constituency, and the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda, are expected to lead other distinguished guests and development stakeholders at the gathering.

The luncheon, themed “Beyond the Handouts,” will feature a high-level Fireside Chat titled “Changing the Trajectory: From Poverty Alleviation to Wealth Creation,” providing a platform for meaningful conversations on innovative approaches to economic empowerment, wealth creation, and social transformation.

Organizers disclosed that proceeds from the fundraising campaign will be deployed across three critical intervention areas: education and literacy support, vocational and entrepreneurial development, and sustainable community-based programmes designed to create lasting economic independence. Beyond raising funds, the initiative seeks to inspire collective responsibility among corporate organizations, government agencies, philanthropists, and citizens to invest in people rather than perpetuate dependency.

The organizers emphasized that every contribution made towards the ₦250 million target represents an investment in hope, opportunity, and the future of countless women, youths, widows, and disadvantaged individuals whose aspirations can be transformed through access to education, skills, and economic opportunities.
As preparations intensify for the event, the Heart of Gold Support & Care Initiative and the Patrick Ejedawe Foundation have extended an open invitation to individuals and organizations of goodwill to join the movement and become active partners in creating sustainable change.

The organizations maintain that Nigeria’s development will be accelerated when interventions move beyond temporary relief to building resilient individuals and self-sustaining communities.
With a vision anchored on empowerment, dignity, and lasting impact, the June 26 fundraising luncheon is poised to become a defining platform for advancing a future where opportunity and not poverty, determines destiny.
One Skill. One Life. One Community at a Time.
