Why Charles Orie Emerges as Strategic Choice for Imo’s Governorship— Stakeholders

A coalition under the banner of Concerned Stakeholders for Equity, Development and Strategic Leadership in Imo State has made a strong case for the emergence of Chief Charles Umuezurike Orie as the next Governor of Imo State, describing his candidacy as a strategic imperative rooted in competence, economic understanding, and proven leadership capacity.

In a statement signed by Comrade Okechukwu Nnamdi, the group argued that the future of Imo State must be driven by productivity, resource optimization, and visionary governance rather than sentimental political calculations.

The stakeholders highlighted Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area as the economic heartbeat of Imo State, noting that the oil-rich region remains one of the most strategic hydrocarbon corridors within the Nigeria.

According to the statement, Ohaji/Egbema hosts vast crude oil reserves estimated within Imo State’s 500 million to one billion barrels and an estimated 7.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, making it one of Nigeria’s most significant gas deposit zones.

The group further emphasized that the area houses critical national assets including the ANOH Gas Processing Plant at Assa, reputed as one of Nigeria’s largest gas processing facilities with a projected processing capacity of approximately 850 million standard cubic feet per day, the Assa North–Ohaji South gas field, Waltersmith Modular Refinery, and the Egbema power infrastructure.

These assets, they noted, place the state at the center of Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” policy and position it as a future industrial hub for petrochemicals, power generation, and manufacturing. Despite these enormous contributions to the state and national economy, the group lamented what it described as decades of infrastructural neglect, environmental degradation, and limited socio-economic returns to the host communities.

They maintained that this disconnect between resource wealth and grassroots development presents a compelling argument for equity and the need for leadership that understands the region’s strategic importance.

The statement identified Chief Charles Umuezurike Orie as the ideal candidate to bridge this gap.

Drawing attention to his tenure as Managing Director of the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), the stakeholders pointed to his track record of impactful governance, including the construction of three ultra-modern hospitals across oil-producing local government areas, rehabilitation of 20 primary healthcare centres, establishment of a skill acquisition centre, and delivery of critical infrastructure such as bridges that improved access across rural communities.

They also credited him with youth empowerment initiatives, agricultural interventions, scholarship programmes, and human capital development efforts that they said laid a sustainable foundation for long-term prosperity.

The group noted that Chief Orie’s international exposure and diaspora engagements further distinguish him as a leader with the global perspective necessary to attract investment, foster innovation, and align Imo State with international development standards.

According to the stakeholders, the governorship debate in Imo State should center on competence, readiness, and strategic alignment with the state’s economic realities.

“Chief Charles Umuezurike Orie represents more than a zoning consideration; he embodies the competence, character, and development-focused leadership required to transform Imo State’s enormous natural resource wealth into shared prosperity,” the statement read.

The group concluded by asserting that after decades of powering Imo’s economy, Ohaji/Egbema deserves the opportunity to provide leadership capable of converting the region’s economic strength into statewide transformation.

They called on political stakeholders, opinion leaders, and citizens across Imo State to rally behind what they described as a practical and forward-looking choice for the state’s future.
